Newbie Caddie Swiftly Transitions from Training Program to PGA Tour in Matter of Days
Golf's Lightning-Fast Lifer:
Ronan 'Goose' Lucey, a 26-year-old caddy at Panther National, took the golf world by storm, going from a caddy fundamentals crash course to peddling bags on the PGA Tour just days later. Sounds a bit like Chuck, that NBC show where the main character magically absorbs skill sets in an instant, huh? Well, not quite, but it's close.
This lively nickname - a nod to the "Loosey-goosey" rhyme and shared with his father - feels more like strategic branding than a family heirloom. Golf is steeped in tradition, and let's be honest; a bald fade doesn't quite grab attention the way a mustache named Goose does. Add to that the line, "Talk to me, Goose," and you've got yourself a winning brand.

The University of Wyoming dropout enrolled in the inaugural Professional Caddie Certification program run by NC State. He studied under a team of industry experts, including heavy hitters like a Tour statistician, a Masters and U.S. Open Rules official, a Tour physio, a golf psychologist, and a Level 4 AimPoint expert. Afterwards, Goose hopped on a flight to Puerto Rico, caddy bag in tow, to support veteran David Hearn at the Puerto Rico Open.
Barely out of the oven, Goose returned to his day job at Palm Beach Gardens, but opportunity was knocking at the Cognizant Classic, right around the corner at PGA National. Heath Holt, one of the caddie program's designers, offered Goose a chance to put his newly acquired knowledge to the test, walking the famous Bear Trap at PGA National.

A serendipitous twists of fate presented Goose with more opportunities. When thirteen players withdrew from the Puerto Rico Open, sudden vacancies appeared deep on the alternate list. Canadian David Hearn was in need of a caddy, and lo and behold, he ran right into Heath Holt in the airport. After a quick recommendation from old friend Brandt Snedeker, the two were off to La Isla del Encanto to caddy David Hearn.
Goose's scramble to make it all happen totaled a 5 a.m. flight the next morning, but rather than sleep, he threw himself into extensive research on the Puerto Rico golf course and David Hearn. He studied every detail of Hearn's yardage numbers, devoured swing videos, and was ready to hit the ground running.

While Hearn and Lucey's teamwork didn't secure the win in Puerto Rico, the 26-year-old caught the PGA Tour bug. Now, he's got his sights set on finding the right Korn Ferry Tour player to team up with, hustling and grinding to make his way to the PGA Tour.
As Grant Berry, one of his instructors in the certification program, put it, "Seeing Ronan apply his intensive training so effectively right away was incredibly rewarding." With his newfound professional connections and impressive dedication, Goose is proving that lightning can strike twice.
David Hearn, a professional golfer, needed a caddie for the Puerto Rico Open, and he found one in Ronan Lucey, a certified caddie from NC State's Continuing Education program. Ronan had gained his certification quickly, and his creditline extended to his extensive research on the Puerto Rico golf course and David Hearn. Currently, Ronan is searching for the right Korn Ferry Tour player to work with in his ambition to join the PGA Tour, just like David Hearn did previously.
