Northeast India's Logistics Set for Boost with Two Multimodal Parks

The Northeast region of India, home to over 45 million people, is set to boost its logistics capabilities with two multimodal parks under development in Tripura and Assam. The NE Logistics Conclave 2022, scheduled for 6 December in Guwahati, will discuss strategies to accelerate logistics development and strengthen the ecosystem.

The conference, themed 'Building Logistics Capitals in Northeast', aims to address key drivers for improving logistics infrastructure and connectivity. Currently, the region boasts 17 air cargo terminals and over 2.5 lakhs MT cold storage capacity, with road and rail infrastructure rapidly growing. The Central Government has invested over INR 26,000 crore in northeast development.

Despite these advancements, only one state has a logistics policy, and another is in the formulation stage. Six states still lack robust logistics strategies. The conclave seeks to bridge these gaps and enhance connectivity for economic development in the region, which contributed 2.8% to India's GDP in 2019-2020. The PM Gati Shakti initiative, launched in October 2021, supports this endeavour by integrating infrastructure planning and implementation.

The NE Logistics Conclave 2022, organized by the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), is poised to shape the future of logistics in the northeast. With two multimodal parks on the way and a commitment to improving connectivity, the region is set to unlock its economic potential and drive further GDP growth.
