Northwest Media Group is now under the control of Madsack.
The Nordwest Mediengruppe, based in Germany, is set to join the Madsack Mediengruppe network from early 2026, marking a significant move in the German media landscape. The transaction, which includes activities in printing, logistics, and stakes in publishing-related service companies, is expected to accelerate Madsack's digitalization and growth course.
The publishing business of daily newspapers such as 'Nordwest Zeitung', 'Emder Zeitung', 'Anzeiger für Harlingerland', and their respective digital offerings are part of the deal. Stephan von Bothmer, on behalf of the NWZ Group shareholders, looks forward to the sale positively.
The sale comes at a time when the number of sold copies of 'Nordwest-Zeitung' in Germany has decreased. In Q2, the newspaper had around 70,000 sold copies in print and e-paper format, a decrease from over 80,500 a year ago. However, the paid-content offering 'NWZ online Plus' continues to thrive, with over 26,100 daily users, as reported by IVW. In August, 'NWZ online' recorded 5.95 million visits and 1.65 million qualified clients, according to IVW.
Thomas Düffert, CEO of Madsack Mediengruppe, expresses satisfaction with the acquisition. Madsack, one of the largest German newspaper associations with many established titles, including in Lower Saxony, sees the Nordwest Mediengruppe as a perfect fit for its strategic focus. The company's annual turnover of over 120 million euros and its entrepreneurial and economically well-positioned status make it an attractive addition to the Madsack network.
The individual business areas are expected to benefit from the extensive experience and synergies of the Madsack Mediengruppe. The acquisition secures the long-term strong position of the well-established publishing, printing, and logistics business. Madsack Mediengruppe is investing heavily in the future of regional quality journalism.
The takeover will be effective from January 1, 2026. The company that will take over Nordwest Mediengruppe is the MADSACK Mediengruppe, as stated by Thomas Düffert. The acquisition is expected to be a positive step for both parties, bringing together two strong media entities in the German market.
