'Nosferatu' Makes a Significant Dent in the Christmas Weekend Movie Earnings

The horror remake "Nosferatu" and the Bob Dylan biopic "A Complete Unknown" both had strong starts at the five-day box office over the Christmas weekend.

"Nosferatu" and "A Complete Unknown" both debuted on Christmas Day. Focus Features' "Nosferatu" is playing in 2,992 North American theaters, while Searchlight Pictures' "A Complete Unknown" is showing in 2,835 domestic locations.

According to "Deadline", "Nosferatu"—a modern take on the 1922 horror film classic directed by Robert Eggers and starring Bill Skarsgård, Nicholas Hoult and Lily-Rose Depp—is projected to earn $40.3 million in its five-day opening weekend in North America, securing the third spot at the box office.

The trade publication also predicts that director James Mangold’s "A Complete Unknown"—starring Timothée Chalamet as Bob Dylan during the early stages of the music legend's career in the 1960s—will make $23 million in its five-day opening weekend.

"Deadline" reported that "Nosferatu" had a budget of $50 million before post-production costs.

"A Complete Unknown", as per "IMDb", had a budget of $65 million before promotional and advertising expenses.

"Mufasa: The Lion King" Surpasses "Sonic the Hedgehog 3" in Second Weekend

Following a weak first weekend Dec. 20-22, Disney's "Mufasa: The Lion King" is projected to reign supreme at the five-day Christmas weekend box office with $63.7 million in domestic ticket sales from 4,100 theaters, as reported by "Deadline".

If the estimates hold, it will increase "The Lion King" prequel's total North American earnings to $111.4 million.

On the other hand, Paramount Pictures' "Sonic the Hedgehog 3", which claimed the top spot in its opening weekend Dec. 20-22, is projected by "Deadline" to finish second at the extended holiday weekend box office with $59.9 million in domestic ticket sales from 3,769 theaters.

Should the estimates hold, it will move "Sonic the Hedgehog 3"’s total domestic earnings to $137.5 million by the end of its second weekend.

Coming in fourth behind "Nosferatu" is the Universal Pictures’ blockbuster musical "Wicked", which is projected by "Deadline" to earn $31.7 million from 3,177 theaters over the five-day weekend and boost its total domestic earnings to $424.4 million.

Taking fifth place, "Deadline" notes, is Disney's "Moana 2", which "Deadline" projects will earn $27.9 million from 3,410 theaters domestically and boost its total domestic earnings to $394.2 million.

New releases in theaters this weekend include the A24 erotic thriller "Babygirl" starring Nicole Kidman and Harris Dickinson, and Amazon MGM Studio's boxing drama "The Fire Inside" starring Ryan Destiny and Brian Tyree Henry.

"Deadline" projects that "Babygirl" will earn $7.2 million from 2,115 domestic theaters and finish seventh at the box office over the five-day weekend. Meanwhile, "The Fire Inside" is projected to earn $4.3 million in 2,006 North American theaters and finish tenth in the five-day opening frame.
