Obstructions on both sections of the A46 highway

On July 23, 2025, around mid-afternoon, the stretch on the A46 highway, from Haan-Ost to Wuppertal-Sonnborn, heading towards Kreuz Nord, unexpectedly shut down. An additional closure will kick in, going towards Duesseldorf, starting from Friday.

The Wupper Bridge, connecting the A46 with the L418, the Burgholz Tunnel, and the Kiesberg Tunnel, is currently undergoing repairs due to recent damage. The repairs include the installation of noise-reducing open-pored asphalt (OPA) and are planned to commence as soon as possible.

During this period, traffic is being directed via the ramp to the Wuppertal-Sonnborn interchange for travel towards Dortmund. It is highly recommended to bypass the area as much as possible, especially during the summer months, as the entire project is scheduled to be completed by summer 2026.

The closure is necessary to allow for the completion of the supporting framework by the end of July 2025. The Autobahn GmbH initially hoped to only close two main lanes and reroute traffic via the hard shoulder, but this is no longer possible.

Another section of the road is set to close from Friday (25th July) at 9 PM to Monday (28th July) at 5 AM, affecting the section from the Wuppertal-Sonnborn interchange to the Haan-Ost exit. During this period, drivers are advised to utilise alternative routes such as A1, A3, A40, and A52.

It is important to note that, at the time of writing, detailed information on traffic diversion plans, repair timeline, and alternative routes for the Wupper Bridge closure specifically are not found in the provided sources. However, to stay informed, we recommend checking local government or transportation department websites, official traffic or road condition portals related to the area, and recent municipal news or press releases announcing bridge maintenance or closures.

The Wupper Bridge underwent renovation in 2023 as part of the Westring Bridge renovation. The new pillars are scheduled to be completed by the end of July 2025, and the entire project is estimated to cost around 8.5 million euros.

A traffic jam formed during rush hour due to the bridge damage, highlighting the importance of being aware of the ongoing repairs and planning alternative routes in advance. We encourage all drivers to stay safe and informed during this period.

In light of the ongoing repairs and the closure of The Wupper Bridge, it might be essential for commuters to adjust their routes, particularly during the summer months, considering the detour via the A1, A3, A40, and A52 due to the unavailable section from the Wuppertal-Sonnborn interchange to the Haan-Ost exit. Moreover, the automotive industry and transportation finance sectors might experience fluctuations during this period, as traffic congestion could affect logistics and supply chains within the region.
