Ontario boosts Chapman's Ice Cream with a $200 million investment
The Ontario government has made a significant investment in Chapman's, Canada's largest independent ice cream manufacturer, to help the company expand its operations and build a new facility in Markdale. Premier Doug Ford announced the investment during a press conference on Friday.
The planning for the new Chapman's production building began in 2019, and construction commenced early in 2020. The new facility, spanning 175,000 square feet, will increase production capacity for Chapman's, enabling the company to meet growing demand and expand into international markets.
Chapman's COO, Ashley Chapman, expressed gratitude for the province's support, stating that it will help the company establish a stronger competitive ground. The investment is expected to create 200 new jobs, bringing Chapman's workforce to over 1,000 employees.
Premier Doug Ford, known for his love for Chapman's products, claimed that Chapman's ice cream sandwiches are the best anywhere. He held a Chapman's ice cream bar during the press conference and even took a bite of an ice cream sandwich, further emphasising his support for the brand.
The new facility will allow Chapman's to continue making over 200 products, all of which will use exclusively Canadian milk and cream. This commitment to Canadian ingredients is a testament to Chapman's dedication to quality and local sourcing.
Premier Ford referred to the investment as a "major vote of confidence" in Ontario's economy and workers. The press conference was held outside Chapman's facility, symbolising the start of a new chapter for the company and the community of Markdale.
The expansion of Chapman's is not mentioned to create a specific number of new jobs beyond the expected 200. However, the increased production capacity will allow Chapman's to develop new products and continue its growth trajectory.
The new facility in Markdale is not expected to change Chapman's status as Canada's largest independent ice cream manufacturer. Despite the growth, Chapman's remains committed to its roots and the quality that has made it a beloved brand across the country.
