Owners of Kias between 2011 and 2022 facing theft threats offered software update and cash compensation up to $650
The Kia Theft Settlement, part of a broader Hyundai and Kia class action lawsuit, offers compensation and benefits to owners of certain Kia models due to a defect related to missing or inadequate anti-theft immobilizer technology that increased vehicle theft risk.
Key Details of the Settlement
The settlement includes several benefits for eligible vehicle owners:
- Extended Warranty: Free inspections and necessary repairs related to the defect are covered for 15 years or 150,000 miles.
- Reimbursement for Repairs and Expenses: Owners can receive reimbursements for qualifying repairs performed at authorized repair shops.
- Goodwill Payments: Monetary compensation is offered for inconvenience caused by delays in repairs.
- Reimbursement of Expenses: Coverage includes expenses related to transportation, lodging, and meals if owners are stranded due to a qualifying vehicle failure or fire.
- Free Software Upgrade: A security enhancement software upgrade is provided to eligible vehicles to reduce theft vulnerability.
- Steering Wheel Locks: Reimbursement for the cost of steering wheel locks purchased by owners.
- Settlement Amount: The total settlement fund is approximately $145 million, with some reports indicating $62.1 million specifically related to Kia and Hyundai theft and defect claims. (Note: Payments were temporarily on hold pending appeal resolution expected between September 2025 and June 2026.)
Eligible Models
The settlement applies to numerous Hyundai and Kia models primarily from 2011 to 2019, including the Hyundai Santa Fe, Sonata, and Kia Sorento, Optima, Soul, and Sportage within those years.
Claim Process
To receive compensation, eligible class members must submit a Claim Form, which can be found on the Settlement website (www.KiaTheftSettlement.com). Claimants can also request a Claim Form to be mailed to them if they prefer not to submit online.
The Settlement website also offers downloadable and printable Claim Forms. Completed Claim Forms must be accompanied by all required supporting documentation. Claimants are encouraged to submit their Claim Form and supporting documentation online.
Reimbursement for Steering Wheel Locks and OEM-Issued Key Fobs
Reimbursement up to $250 for the purchase and installation of a steering wheel lock, glass breakage alarm, or similar anti-theft system is available for Class Vehicles not eligible for the Software Upgrade.
Reimbursement for OEM-issued key fobs purchased at the direction of a Kia dealership to implement the Software Upgrade is available, with a cap of $350 per key fob and a limit of up to two key fobs per Class Vehicle.
