Pedaling through Various Towns: A Journey on Two Wheels
The Rhineland Cycling Region project, a collaborative initiative aimed at enhancing cycling infrastructure, has successfully commenced its new phase at the beginning of 2023. The project, which covers the city region of Aachen, the city of Mönchengladbach, the districts of Heinsberg, Düren, and Euskirchen, as well as the Rhein-Kreis Neuss and the Rhein-Erft district, is receiving support from the state of North Rhine-Westphalia with €2 million.
The primary focus of the project is on the interurban cycling network, with a particular emphasis on planning cycling priority routes and expressways. The initiative aims to expand existing cycling infrastructure and construct missing connections, with the ultimate goal of significantly increasing cycling as a mobility option of the future. Concrete, investment-preparing feasibility studies are being implemented in all partner districts and cities until the end of 2025.
The project partners have already considered a regional cycling network that includes around 300 km of cycling expressways. These expressways and priority routes are designed to be closely linked to public transport, improving connectivity and safety for cyclists. In addition to investment-preparing measures, professional exchanges on planning developments for the comprehensive cycling network are taking place.
Further partners and members of the project steering group include the Zukunftsagentur Rheinisches Revier ZRR, Zukunftsnetz Mobilität NRW, Straßen.NRW, the ADFC North Rhine-Westphalia, the Nahverkehr Rheinland, the Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Ruhr, and the Radregion Rheinland.
For more specific details on the Rhineland Cycling Region project, it would be best to contact local or regional authorities responsible for its development. It's also worth noting that a conference on the subject is planned for 26 September 2023 in Alsdorf.
The implementation period for the project extends to around the year 2040.
