Delving into Dachauer Straße's Underpass Transformation: An Update for Residents and Visitors

By: Katharina Brumbauer

It's business as usual (sort of) around Dachauer Straße as the rail underpass construction project chugs along.

Work on the underwater concrete foundation for the new rail underpass is occurring at full speed on Moosacher Dachauer Straße. This significant construction project is set to be wrapped up by the end of 2026, but that means busy times ahead for drivers and pedestrians alike until the work's completion.

While drivers will need to detour around the construction site, the good news is that they may still be able to pass through the area via Bauberger or Pelkovenstraße to reach Breslauer Straße. Meanwhile, pedestrians and cyclists will be required to find alternative routes until 2025 to stay clear of the construction zone, according to a railway company spokesperson's response to our inquiry.

Between Breslauer and Grobenzeller Straße, the section of Dachauer Straße will remain under lockdown, unfortunately. But fear not, for the project is still on schedule, assures the spokesperson, despite the extended construction period. As for pedestrians and cyclists passing through the underpass, they can look forward to temporary paths that will offer brief respite from the construction chaos.

The project aims to optimize clearance height by lowering the underpass. Back in September 2021, the railway also refurbished the aging old railway bridge, lengthening it and expanding the underpass, enabling the city to build separate bike and pedestrian paths and a left-turn lane for cars that extends under the bridge. This enhancement not only enhances traffic safety but also seeks to improve the overall flow of traffic in the area.

Construction of the bike and pedestrian paths is scheduled for next year, and at the moment, the team is working diligently on the underwater concrete base and its reinforcement. Soon, they will be pumping out the groundwater that has been trapped inside the construction pit since the beginning of the year due to the lowering of the street. Once the pit is emptied, a groundwater retention basin will be constructed, which is expected to be completed in 2026.

With an estimated budget of 13 million euros, there's no risk of the project's expenses going over budget, the spokesperson assures us. Moreover, there's no imminent plan for further nighttime work during sleeping hours, the spokesperson reveals, bringing some relief to local residents.

To stay updated on any detour arrangements or alternative routes during the construction of the Dachauer Straße underpass, we recommend consulting local Munich traffic or municipal authorities. These entities typically publish detailed traffic management plans, which include thorough detour routes and pedestrian/cyclist alternatives for major construction projects.

The industry of construction is heavily invested in the underpass transformation on Dachauer Straße, with transportation infrastructure at the forefront of the project. The project, financed with an estimated budget of 13 million euros, aims to optimize the clearance height by lowering the underpass, enhancing traffic safety and improving transportation flow in the area.
