Soaking in a Sea of Stagnation: Bavarian Economy Remains in the Doldrums
- 👋
Prospects of Economy Remain Dismal with Persistent Stagnation Looming Ahead - Persistent financial struggles persist with no evident resolution in sight.
A dismal economic outlook persists in Bavaria, with nary a glimpse of better times for the better part of four years. The latest business climate survey from the Bavarian Chamber of Industry and Commerce paints a gloomy picture, with merely eight percent of businesses describing their current economic situation as "good".
"It's a downward spiral without a break," says BIHK Chief Executive Manfred Goessl. Though there's been a slight uptick in expectations for the immediate future compared to the start of the year, these expectations remain in the negative, balancing out to zilch - goose eggs if you fancy the colloquialism.
Not a light at the end of the tunnel in sight
The current BIHK business climate index hovers at 104 points, ever so slightly higher than the start of the year, yet still lagging far behind the long-term average. Every sector is in the dumps compared to a year ago - services, construction, retail & wholesale, industry, and tourism. Optimism for a turnaround has improved only in the construction sector and wholesale.
Call it quits, the new government ain't the answer
The BIHK survey reveals that many businesses view the new coalition government with a jaundiced eye. In the words of BIHK President Klaus Josef Lutz, "The devastation is so immense that entrepreneurs' expectations aren't exactly sky-high." Reflecting on the past two federal governments - the SPD-led traffic light coalition and its predecessor government led by Angela Merkel (CDU) - he laments the damage inflicted upon the economy.
Lutz also alludes to the latest issue of the "Index of Economic Policy Uncertainty" (Index of economic policy uncertainty) authored by American academics, revealing that Germany sits atop the throne of uncertainties. "We've got the crown for uncertainty," quips Goessl.

The Bavarian Chamber of Industry and Commerce reveals that Bavaria's ongoing economic stagnation is driven by multiple, interconnected factors, such as the weak advertising market, broad economic woes, high energy costs for energy-intensive industries, and a shrinking workforce due to demographic trends. These pressures contribute to Bavaria's lingering economic malaise, even as the German federal government attempts to stimulate growth through various measures, including tax reductions, investment funds, and bureaucratic streamlining, but remains hamstrung by fiscal constraints and structural hurdles.
