Planned Development: North Terminus at Schöneweide Station
In the heart of Treptow-Koepnick, the district office is collaborating with Deutsche Bahn to redesign the northern plaza of Bahnhof Schoeneweide. This long-awaited home remodeling project, which has been in the works since the comprehensive renovation of the Goerlitzer Bahn began in March 2013, aims to breathe new life into the historic station that has seen significant modernization needs accumulate since the 1970s.
The northern plaza, long closed and covered in graffiti, has been a site of deterioration for years. Five years ago, it was even the scene of a fire. The district's vision is to transform this space into a more passenger-friendly, comfortable, and barrier-free environment.
Claudia Leistner, the traffic officer in the district administration of Treptow-Köpenick, has expressed her desire for the planning process for the redesign of the square in front of Bahnhof Schöneweide to commence at the start of 2024. However, no concrete timeline for the project has been set yet.
The home remodeling encompasses more than just aesthetic changes. It includes the construction of a new tunnel for passengers, a separate tunnel for trams, and improvements in accessibility with the addition of escalators and elevators. The redesign also aims to link various mobility options, making Bahnhof Schoeneweide a significant local and long-distance transport connection in southeastern Berlin.
The total investment for the home remodeling is 45 million euros. A feasibility study for a bicycle parking garage on the station grounds is currently being carried out by the state-owned company Infravelo.
Bahnhof Schoeneweide was one of the three most relevant long-distance train stations in East Berlin before the fall of the Berlin Wall. Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, the station was gradually expanded and modernized. Today, it stands as a testament to the city's rich history and a symbol of its continued development.
As the home remodeling progresses, the public will be involved in the planning at an early stage. Transport councillor Claudia Leistner (Die Gruenen) has expressed her hope that the project will be completed this year. Until then, construction fences dominate the plaza on Michael-Bruckner-Straße, and rubbish piles up on the unused stairs.
Despite the challenges, the district office and Deutsche Bahn remain committed to the redesign of Bahnhof Schoeneweide's northern plaza, working towards a brighter future for this significant transportation hub in Treptow-Koepnick.
