Porsche Temporarily Halts Sales of Taycan Electric Vehicles in the UK Over Battery Fire Risks
Porsche has temporarily suspended the sale of some first-generation Taycan electric vehicles in the United Kingdom due to safety concerns linked to the vehicle's high-voltage battery system. This recall affects Taycan models released since 2019, prompted by issues with battery modules that could cause fires from short circuits.
The affected vehicles were produced between 2019 and 2023. To mitigate the risk, current owners of the affected models are asked to limit charging to no more than 80% capacity. Owners are also asked to avoid charging near buildings or under car covers.
Porsche has offered a free software update for battery condition monitoring but continues to recall vehicles to address these battery fire risks. The suspension of sales is only affecting a small number of older units. Most Taycans on the market remain unaffected and are still available for purchase.
The battery monitoring software update for the affected Taycan models is expected to be released by the end of June 2025. In the meantime, Porsche is preparing a software update to address the issue. The update will be capable of detecting early signs of battery malfunction and alerting the driver.
This news about the battery issue adds to a string of recent challenges for the Taycan, including a significant drop in global sales. Despite the setback, Porsche is committed to resolving the battery issue swiftly.
It's important to note that steep depreciation in used vehicle values is also among the challenges faced by the Taycan.
