In an unexpected turn of events, the price difference between Super E10 and diesel fuel in Germany during the summer of 2025 has narrowed significantly, with Super E10 now costing just 5.2 cents more per liter on average. This anomaly, despite diesel being subject to lower taxation, can be primarily attributed to market price dynamics rather than tax policy alone.

As of July 1, 2025, the average price of Super E10 in Germany was approximately 168 euro cents per liter, while diesel was roughly around 166 euro cents per liter in April 2025, showing only about a 2-cent difference. Normally, diesel's lower tax burden would result in a more significant price gap favouring diesel as the cheaper option. However, recent energy market fluctuations and supply-demand factors have driven diesel prices close to or even slightly below gasoline prices.

One major influencing factor continues to be the broader geopolitical and economic impacts linked to the Russia-Ukraine war since 2022, which caused dramatic volatility in fuel prices globally and affected both diesel and gasoline markets almost equally.

Fuel prices at stations can vary significantly by location and competition, sometimes showing small price differences between fuels even if tax rates diverge. The current prices at more than 14,000 gas stations in Germany can be viewed around the clock via the "ADAC Drive" app, which also allows users to search for the cheapest gas station nearby.

The price decrease of both fuel types was facilitated by a slightly lower crude oil price. As of July 16, 2025, a barrel of Brent crude oil currently costs around 69 US dollars, down from 70 US dollars a week ago.

It's worth noting that diesel is currently only 1.1 cents cheaper than a week ago, and gasoline is 1.8 cents cheaper. According to ADAC, diesel is currently overpriced, with the mineral oil tax on diesel being around 20 cents lower than that on Super E10.

For drivers planning a summer holiday, ADAC provides tips for cost savings, such as refueling in the evening and away from highways, where prices are on average around 13 cents per liter cheaper than in the morning hours and more than 40 cents cheaper than at a highway gas station.

In the summer of 2025, despite diesel's lower taxation, the energy market and supply-demand factors have resulted in Super E10 costing only 5.2 cents more per liter on average, compared to the norm. This anomaly is also influenced by the broader geopolitical and economic impacts linked to the Russia-Ukraine war, which has affected both diesel and finance markets.
