Verdi Announces Retail Strikes in Baden-Württemberg Region on October 31

In a significant development, the service union Verdi has announced full-day warning strikes for Tuesday, October 31, 2023, in various cities within the Baden-Württemberg region. The strikes are part of the ongoing wage negotiations for retail and mail order, which have been ongoing since April.

The strikes are aimed at pressing for a 15 percent increase in wages and salaries in retail. Verdi is also seeking the application of a general binding for the entire retail sector. The affected companies include retail and drugstore chains, such as Kaufland, Ikea, H&M, Primark, Obi, and the drugstore chain dm.

Employees in the regions listed are being called upon to participate in the strikes. The strikes are scheduled to take place in several cities, including Karlsruhe, Pforzheim, Freudenstadt, Mannheim, Heidelberg, Stuttgart, Reutlingen, Tübingen, and Esslingen.

The next negotiation date for retail and mail order is scheduled for November 3, marking the fifth round of discussions. It is important to note that these strikes are ahead of the next wage negotiations in November and December.

In the wholesale sector, Verdi is demanding a 13 percent increase in wages and salaries. For apprentices, Verdi is demanding a payment of 175 euros in wholesale and 200 euros in retail.
