WABC Radio and Broadcasters Foundation of America Launch Hurricane Relief Fund

In the aftermath of two devastating hurricanes, Hurricane Helene and Milton, the Broadcasters Foundation of America (BFA) has launched a relief fund to assist affected broadcast professionals. The BFA, a 501(c)3 public charity, provides assistance to television and radio broadcasters in acute financial need due to health problems, disasters, or other life-changing circumstances.

Tim McCarthy, President of the BFA, expressed his gratitude for the support of industry leader John Catsimatidis. Catsimatidis, owner of Red Apple Media and radio station WABC (AM) New York, has committed to matching $25,000 of any donation made to the BFA.

"The foundation can provide assistance to those in the industry who need it most, including in times of emergency," McCarthy stated. Catsimatidis added that his family, Red Apple Media, and WABC Radio have supported numerous causes and organizations.

WABC is not only contributing financially but also running public service announcements (PSAs) asking its listeners to give. The station has produced a taggable version of the PSA for use by other radio stations who can insert their own call letters.

As of Oct. 5, the death toll from Hurricane Helene stood at 227, making it the deadliest hurricane to hit the U.S. mainland since Hurricane Katrina struck the New Orleans area in 2005. Hurricane Milton followed, barreling across Florida and knocking out power to over 3 million homes, prompting 150 tornado warnings, according to the Associated Press.

McCarthy urged every broadcaster to consider giving an individual or corporate donation to continue the charitable mission for broadcasters in need. For more information on the charity effort, a link is provided. Catsimatidis applauded all those who have already donated, stating that every dollar helps.

The donation is intended to fund emergency grants for individual broadcasters affected by the hurricanes. Catsimatidis also stated that he will match the next $25,000 in donations to help broadcasters affected by the hurricanes get back on their feet.

The BFA engages in nationwide efforts to identify broadcasters in need and provide them with an anonymous safety net. By working together, the broadcast industry can make a significant difference in the lives of those affected by these natural disasters.
