The U79 line in Cologne is currently experiencing disruptions due to asbestos renovation work at the Nordstraße U-Bahn station. Rheinbahn, the local transport authority, has deployed substitute buses to ensure continuous service between Altstadt and Stockum during the closure periods.

The asbestos removal and safety renovations are a necessary part of the ongoing construction work at the Nordstraße U-Bahn station, which has been ongoing since July. The overhead line at the station needs to be switched off for the installation of a dust-tight partition wall.

These disruptions coincide with increased travel demand related to an upcoming Ed Sheeran concert at the Arena on September 5. While the exact reopening date of the U79 line is yet to be confirmed, it is expected to reopen in time for the concert.

Rheinbahn will likely update passengers with specific timelines as the work progresses. In the meantime, nighttime closures will occur between Altstadt and Stockum in the last week of August and the first week of September.

The use of substitute buses and nighttime closures aims to minimise the impact on daytime commuters and event attendees, ensuring passenger mobility while the affected sections undergo safe renovation. The good news is that no asbestos was found at adjacent U-Bahn stations, which means the renovation work is being carried out in a controlled and safe environment.

Passengers are advised to check the latest travel information and plan their journeys accordingly to avoid any inconvenience caused by the disruptions. Stay tuned for updates from Rheinbahn regarding the reopening of the U79 line.
