Less Construction, More Smooth Sailing: Piedmont Region and Motorway Concessionaires Promise Fewer Roadworks This Summer

Let's face it — nothing ruins a road trip like a stretch of endless construction and lane changes. But this summer, Piedmont region motorists, truckers, and tourists can breathe a sigh of relief. All the concessionaire companies have promised to reduce roadworks on the motorway network, ensuring a hassle-free journey, even in Problemia, a place that's been stuck in a construction jungle since 2018.

A Roundtable for Results

The revelry was unveiled at the second plenary meeting of the construction huddle, where the Region, Ministry of Infrastructure, and concessionaires got together. Marco Gabusi, the regional assessor for Infrastructure and Transport, was the ringleader. He addressed the gathering: "Our goal? Fewer sh*tshows for drivers, more safety, and prompt updates for citizens. This huddle works, and the collaboration between us is like a well-oiled machine."

The General Motorway Directorate of the Ministry of Infrastructure, responsible for Piedmont, Aosta Valley, and Liguria, vouched for the Ministry's full support and the effectiveness of the work method begun. They paid special attention to tourist flows heading to Liguria, lake areas, and the Susa valley—critical economic and tourism hubs.

The concessionaires shared the desire to limit construction during peak periods, focusing instead on night hours and less-busy times.

The Snarls of A26 in Ovada

Autostrade per l'Italia confirmed they'd make substantial reductions in roadworks, and two lanes would always be available for each direction, except for the Baveno-Carpugnino section, where ongoing construction currently limits the carriageway. The work here is due to wrap up on June 6.

Summer months should be free of roadworks, save for the Santhià junction.

However, come August 25, a fresh roadwork will crop up near the Orba bridge, near Ovada, lasting roughly two months. Don't worry; both directions will still have two lanes.

Tortona's Challenges

The scheduled closure of the Tortona motorway exit was also discussed at the meeting. It's set to commence on June 16 for overpass consolidation works near the "ex Liebig" roundabout. Safety concerns necessitated the intervention, which will last approximately four and a half months.

The closure will affect heavy vehicles, rerouting them to the Casei Gerola and Castelnuovo Scrivia toll booths, causing increased costs and longer travel times for logistics and transport companies. The importance of maintaining a watchful eye on the region and coordinating with the concessionaire company and relevant authorities to minimize the impact on local businesses was emphasized.

Always Watching

"This huddle will keep meeting to ensure constant surveillance. In case of emergencies, we'll organize quick, informal meetings with weekly video conferences between the involved parties, so we can act swiftly and in unison," Gabusi concluded.

  1. In an effort to improve the average experience of motorists, the Piedmont region, along with the Ministry of Infrastructure and the concessionaires, agreed to focus less on construction and more on smooth sailing in the finance and transportation industry.
  2. The General Motorway Directorate, acknowledging the significance of critical economic and tourism hubs like Liguria and the Susa valley, pledged to limit construction during peak hours in the transportation sector, aiming for prompt updates and enhanced safety for citizens.
