Regensburg Eases Solar Rules for Historic 'Ganghofer-Siedlung'

Regensburg has updated its design ordinance for the heritage-protected ensemble 'Ganghofer-Siedlung', now allowing solar energy installations on main buildings with a permit, following previous amendments in 2005 and 2020. The city aims to balance preservation and sustainability.

In 2005, the city introduced an ordinance to safeguard the Ganghofer-Siedlung. Initially, solar installations were only allowed on extension buildings with a permit from 2020. Freestanding installations and those on outer walls or facades were prohibited. The substructure and modules had to match the roof colour.

In 2025, the ordinance was amended again to facilitate renewable energy expansion. Solar installations were permitted on main buildings with a permit. Specific conditions apply, such as maintaining a minimum distance from the ridge and eaves on saddle roofs. Solar roof tiles in 'aged grey' are fully permitted on saddle roofs. Additionally, installations on balconies are only allowed if installed vertically and parallel to the railing.

Regensburg's latest ordinance amendment allows solar energy installations on main buildings of the heritage-protected Ganghofer-Siedlung with a permit, promoting the use of renewable energy while preserving the ensemble's historic character.
