Berner Kantonalbank AG (BEKB) has announced the appointment of Markus Schwab as the head of its newly established Department of IT Management and Value Streams. The news comes as part of BEKB's ongoing efforts to strengthen its digital offerings and innovation capabilities.

Schwab, a seasoned professional in the digital financial sector, brings with him over two decades of experience from PostFinance and his recent role as CEO of the Swiss financial app Yuh AG. His appointment is set to commence by February 2026.

Known for his visionary and implementation-focused leadership, Schwab has overseen the strategic and operational direction of Yuh since its launch in May 2021. His work with the app aims to make banking more accessible to users accustomed to mobile technology.

Schwab's responsibilities at BEKB will include overseeing IT strategy and its execution, driving digital innovation, managing data management, and leading the product and project portfolios focused on digital development. His department will define key applications and manage associated value streams.

BEKB conducted a comprehensive search for a suitable candidate to head the new department, and Schwab's extensive experience in developing innovative financial technologies, combined with his local ties, made him an ideal fit. Armin Brun, CEO of BEKB, stated that Schwab brings valuable input for the digital development of the bank.

The appointment is seen as a step in line with BEKB's strategic direction and continued emphasis on enhancing its digital services. In April 2025, BEKB revised its organizational structure to improve efficiency, innovation, and customer focus. With Schwab at the helm, the bank aims to further accelerate its digital transformation agenda.

Born and raised in Bern, Schwab currently resides in the Bern region with his partner and two children. He holds degrees in business and economics. The featured image credit for this article is edited by the platform Switzerland, based on an image by mrsiraphol via Freepik.
