Rice prices in Japan experience a consecutive eight-week decline.

In a recent development, the price of rice in Japan has witnessed a significant drop, marking the eighth and ninth consecutive weeks of decline. This downturn can be attributed primarily to the Japanese government's release of large amounts of its rice stockpiles into the market.

According to data from 1,000 supermarkets, the average price of rice in the week through July 13 was 3,576 yen per 5 kilograms, a decrease of 13 yen from the previous week. This price drop has been consistent, with the average price falling below 3,600 yen for the second consecutive week, a level not seen in about six months prior to July 13.

The distribution of these reserves began in late May 2021 and has continued to cool prices into June and July. The government's move was a direct measure to ensure a stable supply and reduce the unusually high prices that had doubled compared to the previous year.

Agriculture minister Shinjiro Koizumi attributed the recent decline in rice prices to a series of countermeasures. The increased sales of government-stockpiled rice, sold under no-bid contracts, have been a significant contributing factor to this price decrease.

The price of government-stockpiled rice is significantly lower than the average price of rice sold at supermarkets, currently being sold at around 2,000 yen per 5 kilograms. This intervention has increased the supply in the market, helping to counteract the supply shortages and reduce price spikes caused by poor harvest conditions and other supply chain complexities.

The sale of government-stockpiled rice in the reporting week was the highest since the week through June 22, with 12,984 tons sold. This increase in sales has been consistent for the past three consecutive weeks.

Minister Koizumi believes that these countermeasures have helped prevent rice prices from becoming a key issue in the House of Councillors election. The government's intervention has been instrumental in maintaining a stable food supply and ensuring affordable prices for consumers.

The government's intervention in the rice industry, specifically the sale of its stockpiled rice, has been instrumental in maintaining a stable food supply and ensuring affordable prices for consumers, which has been a significant highlight in the recent Japanese culture, as documented through photos of grocery shopping and food markets. This price drop in rice, due to the government's efforts, has impacted the finance industry, with consumers having more disposable income due to the lower costs of basic food items, potentially leading to increased spending in other sectors of the economy.
