Partial disruptions in S-Bahn services are expected on these upcoming three weekends due to testing of the new signal box at the East Station.

Road closures on multiple weekends in Munich, halting traffic flow on the primary artery.

Get ready, commuters! The usual S-Bahn ride in Munich ain't gonna be the same for a few weekends coming up. Saturdays and Sundays, from 4 am to 4 pm, on February 22/23, March 1/2, and March 8/9, 2025, you'd best have a plan B for your S-Bahn travel. Here's a breakdown of which lines are taking the hit.

Reason for the Mayhem?

You guessed it—construction. But this ain't your regular construction delay; it's a beast called a "construction implementation problem." As a result, a shiny new electronic signal box at the Ostbahnhof won't be fully operational till June 2025. They're still working out the kinks with numerous acceptance tests, which should've been wrapped up last summer. But hey, Rome wasn't built in a day, right?

Whose Line Is It Anyway?

Only the S7 will be cruise control as usual. For everyone else, it's time to embrace the bus replacement service. Here's the lowdown:

  • S 1:
  • Starts/ends at Hauptbahnhof platforms 27-35, skipping Hackerbrücke
  • In/from Petershausen/Altomünster, starts/ends at Isartor
  • S 2:
  • In/from the direction of Erding, starts/ends at Ostbahnhof and runs to/from Riem without stopping
  • In/from Petershausen/Altomünster, starts/ends at Isartor
  • S 3:
  • On the direction of Holzkirchen, starts/ends at Giesing
  • On the direction of Mammendorf, starts/ends at Pasing
  • S 4:
  • In/from Trudering, not running between Trudering and Pasing
  • In/from the direction of Geltendorf, starts/ends at Heimeranplatz platform 11
  • S 5:
  • On the direction of Kreuzstraße, starts/ends at Giesing
  • On the direction of Pasing, not running between Giesing and Pasing
  • S 6 and S 8:
  • In/from Ebersberg, starts/ends at Trudering. A replacement bus service between Trudering and Ostbahnhof
  • In/from Herrsching, starts/ends at Pasing
  • Trains from Tutzing head to the airport
  • Trains from the airport bound for Tutzing

Stay tuned for more updates on this construction chaos. In the meantime, good luck with your alternative travel plans!

In light of the construction implementation problem disrupting the S-Bahn in Munich, affected commuters may need to turn to alternative transportation methods such as buses for travel on specific weekends. The S7 line will remain operational, but the S1, S2, S3, S4, S5, S6, S8, and train services from Tutzing and the airport will rely on bus replacement services during the scheduled disruptions.
