Road Construction Completion: A52 Highway in Essen Now Open for Traffic
The A52 motorway between Essen-Kettwig and Essen-Ost now boasts a significant upgrade, with an eight-kilometre stretch now featuring open-pored asphalt (OPA). This innovative road surface material has been laid as part of the comprehensive construction measures that have recently been completed on the A52.
Open-pored asphalt, also known as porous asphalt, offers a host of advantages in road construction. Its porous structure allows for better absorption of sound waves, reducing traffic noise by around three to five decibels. This noise reduction corresponds to almost a halving of the noise load in human perception, providing noticeable relief for residents.
Moreover, the open-pore surface improves water drainage, reducing the risk of aquaplaning and spray. This is particularly beneficial in heavy traffic and poor weather conditions, as it shortens braking distances and enhances vehicle control.
Mario Korte, head of the Essen branch, expressed his gratitude to road users for their understanding during the construction period. He noted that the renovation of the A52 motorway, which began in June 2016, included the renewal of the roadway in both directions, the renewal of drainage systems, and the renovation, strengthening, and renewal of bridges, noise protection walls, traffic signs, and protective facilities.
