Russia Explores Dedicated Crypto Mining Power Plants to Manage Heavy Energy Use
Russia is exploring dedicated crypto mining power plants to manage heavy energy use. This follows proposals from Aisen Nikolaev, chief of the State Council Commission on Energy, and concerns over excessive electricity consumption in some regions.
Nikolaev suggested building power plants solely for crypto mining, isolating them from public grids. This idea is being considered by the State Council Commission on Energy, an advisor to the President's offices on energy policy matters.
Authorities in Dagestan recently raided a crypto mining facility disguised as a greenhouse. The owner allegedly misrepresented their grid connection to access subsidized energy tariffs, with 69 rigs connected to the grid under false pretenses.
In the Far East, Russia's Deputy Prime Minister Yuri Trutnev recommended redirecting surplus power to support cryptocurrency mining. This aims to utilize excess energy more efficiently. Some local regions are considering building exclusive power plants for crypto mining with no public grid access to address these concerns.
In February 2021, the Russian region of Sverdlovsk recommended using surplus energy from decommissioned power plants for cryptocurrency mining.
Russia is grappling with the energy demands of crypto mining, which has led to capacity shortages and declining power quality in some regions. Officials are exploring dedicated power plants and efficient energy utilization to manage this growing sector.
