Russian Seafood Exports to Japan: Mixed Results in 2025
Russian seafood exports to Japan have seen significant shifts in the first eight months of 2025. While some products experienced substantial growth, others faced declines in volume or value.
Frozen pollock exports to Japan have surged, with a tenfold increase in volume and a fourteenfold rise in value. This trend is mirrored in pollock fillet supplies, which grew by 50% in weight and 55% in value. Additionally, surimi exports from pollock to Japan have increased by 50% in weight and a notable 75% in value.
Japan remains the largest buyer of Russian pollock caviar, accounting for 56% of the market in 2024. Despite this, exports of pollock caviar to Japan have remained steady in the first eight months of 2025, with around 21,000 tons and $110 million.
Frozen pink salmon exports to Japan have also performed well, doubling in weight and nearly tripling in value in the first eight months of 2025. Meanwhile, live sea urchin exports to Japan have increased by 15% in value, although weight levels have remained stable.
However, not all exports have fared as well. Kamchatka crab supplies to Japan have decreased by 35% in volume and 15% in value. Similarly, frozen Opilio crab exports to Japan have seen a 20% decrease in volume but a 5% increase in value.
In summary, Russian seafood exports to Japan have shown mixed results in the first eight months of 2025. While pollock and pink salmon products have experienced significant growth, Kamchatka crab supplies have declined. Japan's dominance as the largest buyer of Russian pollock caviar has been maintained, but overall exports of this product have remained stable. The impact of these trends on the Russian fishing industry and Japanese markets remains to be seen.
