Russia's New Road Signs and Markings Aim to Enhance Safety from 2026

Russia is set to introduce several changes to its road signs and markings, aiming to enhance safety and reduce visual noise. The updates, part of the national project 'Safe and Quality Roads', will come into effect from January 2026.

One of the key changes includes narrowing parking spaces along the roadway, from 2.5 meters by 6.5 meters to 2.25 meters by 6.5 meters. This is expected to improve traffic flow and reduce congestion.

The new GOST also introduces a new road sign, the 'Stop-line', to clearly indicate where drivers should stop at intersections. Additionally, the sign 6.2.1 'Recommended speed when passing an artificial hump' will be introduced to promote safer driving.

In 2026, a socially important sign 'Hearing-impaired pedestrians' will be introduced to raise awareness and improve safety for hearing-impaired individuals. The marking for parking spaces will also be narrowed by 25 cm to reduce visual noise on the road.

These changes, part of the updated GOST regarding road signs, are scheduled to be introduced on January 1, 2026. The 'Safe and Quality Roads' project has already built millions of road infrastructure elements, with a focus on quality and modern requirements. These upcoming changes aim to further improve the safety and efficiency of Russia's road network.
