Saxony-Anhalt's Ports Handle Record Cargo in H1 2025

Saxony-Anhalt's ports have seen a significant surge in cargo handling during the first half of 2025. HHLA, the port operating company, reports an 8.6% increase in goods transported compared to the same period last year, reaching approximately 1.2 million tons. Agricultural and forestry products, along with fish, were the most frequently carried goods.

The total tonnage handled in the first half of 2025 was around 1.1 million tons received and 2.2 million tons sent. Notably, 13.5% of these goods were classified as hazardous. The transshipment of containers via inland waterways decreased by 8.0% to 16,938 TEU during this period.

The majority of goods, 44.3%, were processed at ports in the Elbe region, while 55.7% were handled in the Mittelland Canal region. Interestingly, 59.0% of these goods were shipped to or from ports in other federal states, indicating a high level of interstate trade. The total transshipment in inland ports and transshipment points reached approximately 3.3 million tons.

The ports of Saxony-Anhalt have experienced a substantial increase in cargo handling, with a notable rise in agricultural and forestry products and fish. Despite a decrease in container transshipment via inland waterways, the overall figures indicate a robust and diverse trade activity within the region and with other federal states.
