In a continuation of an ongoing dispute between Deutsche Bahn and the GDL train driver's union, a fourth strike is set to impact public transportation in Berlin, starting at 02:00 on Wednesday, January 23. This strike will disrupt travel through the weekend and last for almost six days, ending at 18:00 on Monday, January 28.

The S-Bahn network in Berlin will not be operational during this period, causing significant inconvenience to commuters. The disruption is the second this month in the city, and it's expected to have a ripple effect on the BVG (the agency that runs the buses, trams, and U-Bahn in Berlin), with potential disruptions due to overspill from the disrupted networks.

The dispute between Deutsche Bahn and the GDL union revolves around an unspecified issue, with the union leadership sharply criticising the new action proposed by Deutsche Bahn. Notably, Claus Weselsky, who was the GDL chairman in 2023-2024, rejected Deutsche Bahn's November 2023 offer of an 11% wage increase over 32 months as insufficient. The latest leadership figure from the union, Mario Reiß, who has been chairman since 2024, has yet to comment on the new offer presented by Deutsche Bahn.

Travel arrangements may need to be adjusted due to the S-Bahn strike in Berlin. Long-distance and regional trains across Germany will also be affected by the strike, potentially causing delays and disruptions nationwide.

It's important to note that a similar collective bargaining effort took eight rounds of strikes in 2015 before a deal was reached. However, this strike doesn't necessarily mean that a resolution is imminent.

Commuters are advised to plan their journeys accordingly and to keep updated with the latest information regarding the strike and its impact on public transportation in Berlin.
