Service on the PATH system restarts on Wednesday, following a suspension of two lines during the infamous 'Summer of Hell'.
Subtitle: Delays, suspensions, and cross-honoring options have caused headaches for commuters in the New York-New Jersey area this week.
In the past few days, subway riders in the New York-New Jersey area have faced significant challenges with major delays on several lines due to various issues. Last week, commuters experienced hellish commutes with major delays on PATH and NJ Transit lines, particularly on the Journal Square-33rd Street and Hoboken-33rd Street lines, following a power outage near the West Fourth Street station in Manhattan and signal problems at other stations.
On Wednesday, both PATH lines resumed service with delays around 2 p.m., but the slower service is expected to continue until replacement parts are installed for a component of an interlocking system, believed to have contributed to the derailment that occurred in July at Hoboken. Starting from Labor Day, PATH will provide 10-minute service instead of the usual 8-minute service on the Hoboken-World Trade Center and Hoboken-33rd Street lines due to switch issues following the derailment.
The delays were in addition to ongoing delays due to issues at Hoboken Station. In response to the disruptions, NJ Transit was cross-honoring PATH tickets at Hoboken, Newark, and New York Penn Station, while the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail was cross-honoring at Newark Penn Station, Exchange Place, and Hoboken. NJ Transit's number 87 and 126 buses were also honoring tickets, and the NY Waterway offered discounted tickets at Hoboken and Brookfield Place.
Unfortunately, the disruptions didn't end there. On Monday, more than a dozen people were treated for smoke inhalation in a fire under a train at the Newport PATH Station in Jersey City. The situation was further complicated by the fact that a dead man's body remained at the Prospect Park Station for hours during the delays.
Commuters have also faced repeated delays due to the week's excessive heat, affecting not only PATH and NJ Transit but also Amtrak services. The Newark-World Trade Center and Hoboken-World Trade Center lines continued running during the service outages to 33rd Street.
In an effort to keep commuters informed, PATH has been announcing cross-honoring options related to the issue on a week-by-week basis. The transportation service has expressed its apologies for the inconvenience caused by these changes, acknowledging that it is frustrating for passengers.
This story has been updated with additional information as it becomes available. Commuters are advised to stay informed and plan their journeys accordingly.
