Severe Employee Deficit Leads to Suspension of Sunday Sandwiches at Baker Becker
Baker Becker, a popular spot for freshly baked rolls in the Marmstorf Shopping Center, has announced a temporary suspension of Sunday opening hours. The decision comes as a result of staff shortages, a problem that has been plaguing the bakery for some time.
According to Martin Krüger, who runs the business with his wife Wiebke Krüger, the issue lies in the unavailability of staff. With employees already working six days a week, finding enough workers to cover all the opening times, especially Sundays, has proven challenging.
This suspension also affects smaller branches and kiosks supplied from Marmstorf.
In an effort to accommodate customers, Baker Becker is offering an alternative solution. Customers can purchase a bag with five half-baked rolls on Saturdays. For those who still prefer the Sunday experience, they can finish baking the rolls at home by putting them in the oven at 200 degrees for ten minutes.
The hourly wage at Baker Becker is now 15 euros. Interestingly, some citizen's income recipients have expressed interest in working for Baker Becker on the side, but the Krügers believe that the current job boost announced by the federal government is not effective in its current form.
Wiebke Krüger took over the business from her father, Peter Becker, in 2018. Despite the temporary closure on Sundays, the bag with two rolls and three Marmstorf Kornknackers remains available at a favorable price of 3.50 euros.
The Krügers regret the suspension of Sunday opening hours for the customers, but they hope to return to normal operations once they can manage their workforce more effectively.
