Shymkent's Race to Full Electrification Hits Snag During Mayor's Speech
Shymkent, the third-largest metropolis in Kazakhstan, is making strides towards full electrification. The city aims to be 100% electrified by 2023, with a significant increase in electricity coverage planned by the end of this year. However, a recent incident during an annual reporting meeting has highlighted the challenges faced in achieving this goal.
During the meeting, the power went out in the studio while Murat Aitenov, the Akim (mayor) of Shymkent, was answering a resident's question via video conference. Despite the unexpected darkness, Aitenov remained calm and continued his speech. This is not the first time such an incident has occurred during a regional Akim's speech, with similar incidents involving falling emblems and cabinet doors in the past.
Shymkent has made significant progress in its electrification efforts. In 2020, 95% of the city's population was connected to quality electricity, with 23,000 people benefiting from network construction in 13 microdistricts. This year, the city plans to commission electricity network construction in 10 microdistricts, providing over 21,000 people with quality electricity supply. The goal is to increase electricity coverage to 97% by the end of 2021, paving the way for full electrification by 2023.
Shymkent's electrification project is progressing steadily, with significant improvements in electricity coverage over the past year. Despite minor setbacks like the recent power outage, the city remains committed to its goal of being 100% electrified by 2023. These efforts aim to enhance the quality of life for Shymkent's residents.
