Rollback on Detention Center's Expansion Plans in Pforzheim

Delay in the Growth of Repatriation Detention Facilities' Development - Significant delay in the progression of the detainee facility's growth

Hey there! Let's talk about the ongoing saga of the detention center in Pforzheim. You know, the city famous for its jewelry and watchmaking industry. But today, we're not talking about bracelets and timepieces, we're diving into bureaucracy and delays.

The expansion of their detention facility has hit a snag. Originally planned for 80 more spaces, it seems like we won't reach that goal till 2027, springtime, at the earliest! According to the Ministry of Justice, this has largely been due to unexpected findings during planning and construction, along with subpar performance by commissioned planning offices.

However, there's a silver lining! At least 68 detention spaces should be available by fall this year. Now, let's address the elephant in the room. The detention center was supposed to be fully renovated by now, but that's been postponed multiple times. The facility opened in 2016 with 36 spaces and had 51 available since mid-2019. The expected cost of renovation? Over 13 million euros – initially, they thought it'd be around 9 million.

The high occupancy rate is no surprise, given the overall increase in deportations in the southwest, according to the Ministry of Justice. As of May, they were accommodating 45 individuals daily – that's a full house, considering reservations. Since the beginning of the year, the facility has been maxed out. But there's no record if any deportations had to be delayed due to space constraints.

As of April 30, around 23,700 people in Baden-Württemberg were up for deportation. But, due to various reasons, such as not being allowed to deport to countries like Syria, their departure has been temporarily halted. By May 31, approximately 1,580 people had been deported from the southwest. Compared to last year, that's an increase of around 450 people.

  1. The community policy in Pforzheim might need to reconsider the allocation of resources, given the ongoing delays and cost escalations in the expansion and renovation of the detention center's employment policy.
  2. The employment policy within the Ministry of Justice should address the persistent issues with commissioned planning offices to ensure the timely execution of the detention center's expansion plans and subsequent reduction of financial burden on local finance.
