Solar Power Dominates EU's Grid in Q2 2025
Solar energy has emerged as a dominant force in the EU's power grid. In the second quarter of 2025, it accounted for 19.9% of total electricity production, becoming the largest source in June with a 22% share. This growth was driven by a significant increase in Luxembourg's renewable energy usage, which rose by 13.5 percentage points.
Denmark led the way among EU countries, with a remarkable 94.7% of its electricity coming from renewable sources. Across the EU, 122,317 gigawatt-hours of solar power were generated in this period. Overall, renewable energy sources contributed to 54% of net electricity production in the second quarter of 2025.
Solar energy's share in renewable electricity reached 36.8% in the EU. This growth can be attributed to various factors, including increased investment in solar power infrastructure and supportive policies. In June 2025, solar energy surpassed other renewable sources to become the largest electricity source in the EU.
The EU's commitment to renewable energy is evident in these figures. Solar power's rise is particularly notable, with significant growth in both absolute terms and as a share of total electricity production. As the EU continues to transition towards a low-carbon economy, the role of solar energy is set to become even more prominent.
