Soltau-Lueneburg Railway Line Revived Early, 2027 Passenger Trains
The Ost-Niedersachsen Schieneninfrastruktur GmbH is leading the charge to revive the Soltau-Lueneburg railway line, with the first passenger trains expected to run as early as 2027. This is a year ahead of the initially planned 2029 date.
The Heidestrecke between Soltau and Lüneburg will offer hourly services, with an estimated travel time of 49 minutes. This could provide a genuine alternative to the current connection via Buchholz to Hamburg, reducing waiting times for passengers travelling from Soltau to Hannover.
The reactivation, set for the end of 2027, will initially use diesel locomotives. However, the long-term plan is to transition to battery-powered trains for a more sustainable operation.
A stop in Hützel is being considered, which could significantly benefit the local company Grube. This could potentially create 200 jobs and transform Hützel into a major transport hub.
The reactivation of the Soltau-Lueneburg railway line is set to improve connectivity and boost the local economy. With the first passenger trains expected in 2027, the project is on track to meet its revised deadline. The initial use of diesel locomotives will pave the way for a future switch to cleaner, battery-powered trains.
