SPD Proposes Disbanding Controversial Intersection at Lirich Location

In the industrial city of Oberhausen, a heated debate has erupted over the proposed bike traffic plans within the Nahmobilitätskonzept (Short-Distance Mobility Concept). Silke Wilts, the SPD faction's spokesperson for urban planning, has demanded a critical review of these plans, citing unspecified concerns.

While there is no available information specifically addressing a failed intersection restoration in Lirich, the controversy surrounding the Concordiastraße intersection has gained prominence. City council members Sonja Bongers and Bülent Sahin, representing Lirich, believe that riding on bike lanes is safe. However, they share the same viewpoint as SPD Oberbürgermeister candidate Thorsten Berg, who demands the restoration of the controversial intersection to its previous state.

Thorsten Berg asserts that the renovation two years ago has made the intersection worse in terms of traffic. The current conditions at Concordiastraße cause traffic jams all the way to Lirich-Mitte, he claims. The intersection's redesign, which features only one left-turn lane, has resulted in buses of STOAG being "completely out of sync" during peak hours, according to Berg, as they have to wait through multiple traffic light phases.

The similar redesign of Bebelstraße with only one left-turn lane also needs to be reversed, as it leads to similar traffic problems, Berg argues. He believes that politics must have the courage to admit mistakes when supposedly good solutions prove to be unsuitable in practice.

Wilts, in support of Berg's stance, notes similar developments at other places in Oberhausen that resemble the failed redesign in Lirich. If such a project were debated in Oberhausen or similar German cities, typical controversial changes and traffic issues might include the reduction of car lanes, pedestrianization, public transit changes, safety concerns, and a lack of community input.

Many municipalities conduct audits or reviews of traffic and mobility projects to assess effectiveness and address public complaints. Data-driven adjustments, traffic flow, accident statistics, and public feedback are typically used to modify plans. Future meetings or surveys may be planned to incorporate community perspectives into revised proposals.
