Sports Betting Firms in Maryland Enhance Industry Diversity with Licenses Granted

Sports betting in Maryland is heating up with three casinos launching in-person betting last week, with two more to follow in the upcoming weeks. Two additional off-track betting facilities, Riverboat-on-the-Potomac and Long Shot's, aim to enter the scene early next year.

These two businesses are perfectly aligned with Maryland's sports betting legislation, which promotes diversity within the industry. Riverboat-on-the-Potomac is a minority-owned business, and Long Shot's is a woman-owned establishment.

According to Maryland Lottery and Gaming Director John Martin, the focus on diversity will remain a priority as the state moves forward, particularly when launching mobile betting and awarding more retail and mobile licenses.

Located in Frederick, Long Shot's is owned by Alyse Cohen, making it the first 100% woman-owned retail sports betting licensee in the state. Cohen is thrilled about leading the way for an underrepresented group in the sports betting industry, especially in a traditionally male-dominated field.

Riverboat-on-the-Potomac, a 100% minority-owned entity, has partnered with PointsBet, as announced in June. This partnership is significant for PointsBet, as it aligns with their objective of working with diverse ownership teams. Riverboat-on-the-Potomac is also a Maryland sports betting entity despite its address in Colonial Beach, Virginia.

Long Shot's, on the other hand, is yet to announce its sportsbook partner, with the details expected in the coming weeks. The team is excited about their plans to make their retail sportsbook a focal point of the county's economic and cultural vitality.

Meanwhile, the Maryland sports betting market is bustling with licensed sportsbooks such as BetMGM, Caesars Sportsbook, DraftKings, FanDuel, and BetRivers. New entrants like Bally Bet, ESPN BET, and Fanatics Sportsbook have also joined the scene recently. Local brands like Crab Sports cater to Maryland residents with localized promotions.

For the most current and specific partnerships or establishments, it's essential to consult local business directories or reach out directly to the establishments for more precise information.
