Stanley initiates a recall of over 2.5 million travel mugs due to potential burn risks.

The recall pertains to all Stanley Switchback and Trigger Action stainless steel travel mugs with polypropylene lids, sold in the U.S., as per the commission's statement. These mugs, available in sizes from 12 to 20 ounces and colors like white, black, and green, have been found to develop loosening issues when exposed to heat and pressure, posing a risk of burns.

The agency recorded over 90 reports globally on this matter, with 38 of these issues linked to burn incidents, 11 of which required medical attention. Out of these, 16 complaints and 2 injury reports were in the U.S.

The commission advises consumers to cease using the affected travel mugs and contact Stanley for a free replacement lid, including shipping costs.

Stanley has provided guidelines on their recall website to help consumers identify the affected models and replace the lids. The mugs usually sell for between $20 and $50, depending on the model, and can be purchased from retailers such as Amazon, Target, Walmart, and Dick's Sporting Goods.

CNN has contacted these retailers, along with Stanley, for comments on the nationwide recall.

Stanley, a century-old company, underwent a brand transformation in 2020, aiming to attract female consumers as a potential new market. The company subsequently introduced an extensive collection of colorful and beautifully designed drinkware, using influential social media personalities to promote their products.

Charles Lindsey, an associate marketing professor at the University of Buffalo School of Management, explained to CNN that the endorsement from trusted social media figures causes the items to gain popularity as symbols of social status and being "in the know."

The recall affects Stanley's business operations, as they need to provide replacement lids for their defective travel mugs.

The brand transformation and colorful drinkware from Stanley have helped increase their business, with social media endorsements boosting their popularity as status symbols.
