California High-Speed Rail Project Moves Forward with Railhead Project in Kern County

The Railhead Project, located in Kern County, California, is currently under construction and serves as a crucial freight yard for receiving and staging materials for the track-laying phase of the California High-Speed Rail (HSR) project.

The Railhead Project supports track installation by facilitating preparation of ballast, ties, and rail installation equipment. The broader high-speed rail project in Kern County has already reached significant milestones, including the completion of the 22-mile Construction Package 4 (CP 4), which consists of viaducts and overpasses from Poplar Avenue in Wasco to approximately one mile south of the Tulare/Kern County line, completed early in 2025.

The upcoming track-laying phase is a major step forward, with passenger service expected between 2030 and 2033. In terms of job creation, the entire California High-Speed Rail project has created over 14,500 jobs to date, with more than 3,200 of those jobs located in Kern County. The Railhead Project's role is crucial in facilitating the efficient progress of track installation and supporting infrastructure build-out, thus expediting the overall construction timeline and fostering continued job growth in Kern County — a key regional hub for the HSR construction effort.

The Railhead Project is a part of Construction Package 4 (CP 4), the southernmost segment of high-speed rail construction in California's Central Valley. The focus of the California High-Speed Rail Authority will be on building only the Central Valley segment of the planned San Joaquin Valley high-speed rail system.

Governor Gavin Newsom, CEO Ian Choudri, and community leaders attended the opening of the Railhead Project in Kern County, California. The delegation for the Southeast Gateway Line, which includes Metro Director Fernando Dutra, Huntington Park Mayor Karina Macias, Gateway Cities COG Executive Director Hector De La Torre, and Paramount Councilmember Isabel V. Porras, led a delegation to Sacramento to advocate for the Southeast Gateway Line.

Despite some political opposition, the Railhead Project signifies a massive step forward for California's high-speed rail program. Governor Newsom stated that California is closer to launching high-speed rail than any other state, and that the Railhead Project represents a significant milestone in bringing the high-speed rail program closer to operations.
