New Static Speed Camera Operational in Dublin's Dolphin's Barn

A new static speed camera has been installed in Dublin's Dolphin's Barn, marking the first of its kind within the city. The camera, situated alongside the Maxol garage on Crumlin Road, began operation on August 1st, 2025, at 12 pm.

The installation of the camera was a collaborative effort between Dublin City Council and An Garda Siochana, with the aim of addressing the persistent issue of speeding vehicles in the area. Vehicles caught speeding at this location will receive Fixed Charge Notices (FCNs) immediately upon detection of an offense. The penalty for speeding is a €160 fine and three penalty points on the driver's license.

The camera's deployment follows a seven-year analysis of collision and speed data, focusing on improving safety in a high-risk area. It continuously monitors speeds, replacing intermittent mobile enforcement with constant surveillance, ensuring that fines will be issued whenever vehicles exceed the posted speed limit at that location.

However, exact data on the volume or frequency of speeding fines issued is not currently available, likely due to the recent deployment of the camera. The camera's implementation was prompted by data on fatal and serious injuries, speed data, and feedback from stakeholders.

The family of Josilaine Ribeiro, a Brazilian carer, called for road safety improvements in Dublin prior to her death at Dolphin's Barn bridge in November 2023. Speed surveys conducted six months before her death found more than 100 cars an hour were breaking the speed limits on Lower Crumlin Road and at the bridge over the Grand Canal at Dolphin's Barn.

Dublin City Council and An Garda Siochana are committed to working together to improve road safety in Dublin. Prosecution of speeding offenses in Dublin will be carried out by fixed charge notice (FCN). The current FCN for speeding offenses in Dublin is a €160 fine accompanied by three penalty points.

Vehicles exceeding the speed limit in Dolphin's Barn will be subject to prosecution from midday on August 1st. The council will continue to work with An Garda Siochana on road safety and measures to improve road safety for all.

The new static speed camera will not only cater to the transportation sector but also serve as a financial tool for Dublin City Council, generating funds from the issuance of Fixed Charge Notices (FCNs) to vehicles caught speeding. This collaboration between Dublin City Council and An Garda Siochana in improving road safety in Dublin is a significant move in the finance and industry sectors, as it aims to combat issues in the transportation sector.
