**Austria Introduces Secure and Modern Digital Driver's License**

Austria has taken a significant step forward in digital transformation, launching a new, secure, and user-friendly digital driver's license as part of its eID Cards platform. This innovative solution, developed by Austrian companies including AUSTRIACARD, integrates seamlessly with Austria’s broader eGovernment and digital identity ecosystem.

The digital driver's license is based on a modular and universally compatible solution that fits various identity documents, including the Austrian driving license, and is compatible with most existing hardware on the market. This flexibility allows for future upgrades with minimal disruption to the current system.

One of the key features of this implementation is secure remote processing. The system operates remotely through a secure, web-based interface, enabling eID or Mobile ID issuing authorities to connect and conduct e-signature-based transactions securely as part of the national identity frameworks. This ensures the issuance and management processes are efficient and compliant with security regulations.

Enrolment for the digital driver's license involves visiting designated centres, where specialized enrollment devices collect and verify applicant data, including personal information and biometric data such as fingerprints, facial images, iris scans, and handwritten signatures. This data is validated against national databases to ensure accuracy and security.

The digital driver's license solution adheres to international standards, ensuring it meets stringent security and interoperability requirements. It is also compliant with ICAO and EU regulations, providing a legally compliant system for citizens and authorities alike.

The platform includes components like the Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS) and an in-house Operating System (ACOS) to manage secure document issuance and trusted services. The digital driver's license can be used as an official, digital proof of identity during a traffic control.

The digital driver's license, launched within "eID Cards", is the first digitalized ID in Austria. Since 2017, OeSD has been bundling its expertise in secure digital identities in its in-house digital subsidiary, youniqx Identity AG. This is Austria's third successful launch of a digital identity in Europe, following the success of "MIA" in two European countries and the Liechtenstein digital identity "eID.li", which was adapted to individual customer requirements and launched in April 2020, based on "MIA".

The apps "eID Cards" and "eID Cards Check" are available for Android and iOS devices. The "eID Cards Check" app is another tool developed by youniqx Identity for secure and easy verification of Austrian digital driver's licenses. For more information about "eID Cards", please visit

The digital driver's license is a product of Austria's thriving technology industry, integrating seamlessly with the nation's broader eGovernment and digital identity ecosystem. This innovative solution, developed by Austrian companies, also has implications for the finance sector, as it enables e-signature-based transactions securely.
