Going Green and Keeping it Affordable: Manuela Schwesig's Energy Agenda

Manuela Schwesig, the Prime Minister of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, is rallying the troops ahead of her meeting with Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU), urging a swift reduction in electricity prices and demand for a clear strategy on financing economic stimulus packages.

As the economy battles to recover, Schwesig—an SPD politician—believes it must grow, and fast. She appreciates the federal government's introduction of the so-called growth booster but insists that it shouldn't unduly burden states and municipalities. Progress on this issue is on her agenda for the upcoming conference.

While the federal government plans to enhance tax depreciation options for businesses and gradually lower corporate tax rates, this proposal has been met with criticism. The municipalities are concerned about their disproportionately high share of the resulting revenue losses. Calculations suggest that the law would result in almost 50 billion euros less in taxes for the federal government, states, and municipalities, with the federal government footing one-third and the remaining two-thirds falling on the states and municipalities, a distribution Schwesig calls "unfair."

Affordable electricity is at the heart of Schwesig's concerns. "We need a comprehensive energy plan for Germany," she demands. This would involve the federal government presenting calculations for future energy demand and considering options for covering this demand with renewable energy sources. Renewable energy must be affordable, according to Schwesig.

To alleviate the immediate financial burden, initiatives like reducing network charges, levies, and electricity tax are underway. However, Schwesig calls for these measures to be implemented promptly to assist both households and industry.

Schwesig's proposal for Mecklenburg-Vorpommern aims to lower energy prices without sacrificing security. The plan stresses that the transition to renewable energy must be sustainable in terms of climate protection, security of supply, and economy. The introduction of an industrial electricity price is supported, as reducing energy costs is critical to boosting the international competitiveness of the German location.

By early December's regular summit, Schwesig hopes to see a reliable long-term strategy from the federal government for the climate-neutral transformation of Germany's energy system. This strategy should prioritize security and affordability, and the phase-out of fossil energy carriers like coal, gas, and oil is set as a medium to long-term goal.
