Swiss Company's €9.8M Seized in Illegal Mercury Trade Case
A Swiss company has had €9.8 million seized by German authorities due to its involvement in an illegal mercury trade between 2011 and 2013. The decision, not yet final, is part of efforts to deprive criminals of their illegal earnings. The company sold approximately 1,000 tons of mercury on the world market instead of disposing of it properly, resulting in millions of euros in profit for the perpetrators. The Regional Court of Essen ordered the seizure of the funds on 02.09.2025, following an investigation by the Staatsanwaltschaft Bochum. The seized funds, amounting to €9,815,426.92, will be used to compensate victims and fund further investigations into the illegal mercury trade. The decision is not yet final, and the company has the right to appeal.
