The Transit Authority of Northern Kentucky (TANK) and the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) have joined forces to launch a free shuttle service, the Licking River Link, starting in January 2026. This initiative coincides with the closure and replacement of the KY 8 Licking River Bridge, aiming to serve pedestrians and cyclists relying on the bridge for daily needs.

The KY 8 Licking River Bridge will shut down to all traffic from January 2026, allowing for utility relocations. Demolition will follow in Spring 2026, with construction lasting around two-and-a-half years. The bridge is expected to reopen by Summer 2028, and the entire project to be completed by Fall 2028.

The Licking River Link shuttle service will operate seven days a week, completing a loop every 30 minutes. It will run from January 2026 until the bridge reopens, providing a free alternative for pedestrians and cyclists needing the bridge for daycare, employment, and groceries. Motorists will detour using the Girl Scout Bridge (KY 1120/11th Street) during the closure, adding approximately five minutes to their commute. This partnership between KYTC and TANK is expected to expedite the construction timeline by about a year.

The Licking River Link shuttle service will ensure continuity for pedestrians and cyclists during the KY 8 Licking River Bridge replacement project. With an expected completion by Fall 2028, this service will provide a crucial connection between Covington and Newport for approximately two-and-a-half years.
