Tanker Collision on Lena River: Captain Drunk, 138 Tons of Gasoline Leaked

A serious ecological incident has occurred on the Lena River. A tanker, the 'Erofey Khabarov', carrying 832 tons of gasoline, collided with a barge, leading to a significant leak of 138 tons into the river. The assistant captain of the tanker now faces a criminal case for violating rules related to environmentally hazardous substances and vessel operation.

The incident took place in the vicinity of Alekseevsk village, Kirensky District, Irkutsk Region, in June 2023. The Governor of Irkutsk Region, Igor Kobzev, revealed that the captain of the tanker was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the collision. The Federal Service for Supervision of Natural Resources in the Irkutsk Region has since filed a lawsuit against Lena United River Shipping Company, demanding 1.26 billion rubles in compensation for the environmental damage caused by the spill of approximately 82 tons of petroleum products into the river. The preliminary estimate of the ecological damage is 839 million rubles. The lawsuit was filed with the Irkutsk Regional Arbitration Court, with a claim amount of 1.259 billion rubles. Sergei Larionov, the General Director of Lena United River Shipping Company, has stated that the company will take responsibility and cover the ecological damage.

The incident has resulted in a substantial ecological impact on the Lena River. The assistant captain of the tanker is now facing criminal charges, and a lawsuit has been filed against the shipping company. The company has accepted responsibility and will pay for the ecological damage. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of strict safety measures and responsible operation of vessels carrying hazardous substances.
