Tech Giant's Payment Policies Modified Following Court Decision: Apple Found to Interfere with Competition in Market Practices

In a landmark move that could shake up the tech industry, Apple has swerved from its strict payment rules for apps after a court ruling declared the company was engaged in anti-competitive practices.

In a ruling from the Northern District of California, Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers made it clear that Apple had willfully violated an injunction from its legal battle with video game developer Epic Games, the brains behind Fortnite. The tech giant blocked Epic's account from the App Store when the company allowed users to bypass the Apple ecosystem to get better payment deals. Epic subsequently sued Apple, claiming the tech giant was acting in an anti-competitive manner.

Fast-forward to 2021, and Judge Rogers ruled that Apple had violated state law and ordered the tech giant to allow developers to guide users to other payment methods - potentially including cryptocurrency. However, years later, the judge found that Apple didn't comply, and that "Apple’s continued attempts to interfere with competition will not be tolerated."

"This is an injunction, not a negotiation. There are no do-overs once a party willfully disregards a court order. Time is of the essence. The Court will not tolerate further delays. As previously ordered, Apple will not impede competition.

The Court enjoins Apple from implementing its new anticompetitive acts to avoid compliance with the Injunction. Effective immediately, Apple will no longer impede developers' ability to communicate with users, nor will they levy or impose a new commission on off-app purchases."

This court order opens the door for digital assets such as cryptocurrency to become a viable means of payment for App Store users. Screenshots from Apple users on the social media platform X show an update clarifying that app developers are now allowed to provide users with external payment options.

Economist Alex Krüger called this development "huge."

  • According to the enrichment data, changes to the Apple App Store payment rules include allowing developers to include buttons, links, or calls to action directing users to external payment systems without Apple's commission (outside the U.S.), U.S. developers no longer needing special approval from Apple, and Apple being prohibited from collecting fees on purchases made via external links in U.S. iOS apps. These changes are a result of a 2025 federal court order, mandating compliance with a 2021 injunction in the wake of Epic Games' lawsuit against Apple. These shifts allow U.S.-based apps to avoid Apple’s commission for digital goods/services purchased through external links and bypass Apple’s in-app purchase system for transactions initiated via off-app links.
