Upgrading Mining Venture: Anglo American Scouts for Salts in Southern Lower Saxony
Resource hunting broadens in Southern Lower Saxony by company - The firm seeks out more raw materials in the southern region of Lower Saxony's landscape.
Take a gander at the expanded mining endeavors in Southern Lower Saxony. The mining company Anglo American Exploration Germany is repurposing their investigations, now keen on scouting for salts alongside metals, as declared by the Lower Saxony State Mining Authority, LBEG. The exploration of rock and potash salts is part of their new plan.
In particular, the region of interest is the 1,961 km² region known as Leine-Salt, located in the western Harz foreland, south of Hildesheim and Salzgitter, and north of Göttingen. This region encompasses numerous towns, including Einbeck, Seesen, and Herzberg am Harz.
Currently, the company is already prospecting for deposits of copper, lead, gold, or silver under the ground. Copter-mounted georadar equipment takes off from Hildesheim to assist in this search. Similarly, the permit for the salt expedition, much like the one for the metal pursuit, spans up until the end of 2028.
Ongoing Investigations in Thuringia
Key minerals like copper are essential for renewable energy transition and economic progress. In this light, a spokesperson for the British parent company affirmed their efforts to bolster responsible resource extraction possibilities. Their goal is to increasingly source vital resources within Europe.
To achieve this, ongoing investigations and preliminary drillings occur in various sites, including Thuringia. If the company discovers significant deposit reserves applicable for commercial mining, a further permit would be required.
Foreseen Discoveries in the Harz
Scholars in the Upper Harz have been examining the area for resources, testing a new measurement technique. Initial findings point towards signs of rare ores potentially lingering in the Harz subterranean regions.
The Harz stands as the largest and oldest mining region in Europe. Records date back to over 3,000 years, depicting historical mining activities of silver, copper, lead, and zinc on a grand scale. Different phases led to the eventual cessation of mining in the Harz during the 19th and 20th centuries, with the last mine shutting down in 2007.
