The horror comedy film starring Rachel Zegler, titled 'Y2K', sets its digital release date.
Y2K, the horror comedy directed by ex-Saturday Night Live star Kyle Mooney, will soon be available for digital streaming.
The film, starring Rachel Zegler as Laura, hit theaters on Dec. 8. The film's synopsis goes like this: Two high school juniors crash a New Year's Eve party and end up fighting for their lives in this dial-up disaster comedy, set on the last night of 1999. Jaeden Martel and Julian Dennison, known for their roles in IT and Deadpool 2, respectively, take on the roles of high school friends Eli and Danny. The cast also includes Alicia Silverstone and Limp Bizkit frontman Fred Durst.
This is Moorey's first directorial venture, produced by Jonah Hill.
As per When to Stream, the movie is expected to be released on digital streaming platforms like Prime Video, AppleTV, and VUDU on Dec. 24. Although When to Stream often provides accurate PVOD reports, A24, the film's studio, has not confirmed the digital release date yet.
Prime Video lists Y2K for pre-order at $24.99. Presumably, this would be the movie's digital purchase price. Given that digital rentals usually cost $5 less, viewers can expect to rent the movie for $19.99 for a 48-hour period.
Critical Reception for 'Y2K'
According to The Numbers, Y2K has managed to earn $3.7 million in North American theaters. The film has not yet been released in international theaters.
Deadline reports that the film had a budget of less than $15 million before printing and advertising costs.
On Rotten Tomatoes, the film scored a 46% "rotten" rating based on 83 reviews, with the Critics Consensus reading, “Y2K garners points for ambition and sheer audacity, despite struggling to sustain the laughs and balance its messy tone.”
On the Rotten Tomatoes Audience Score, the film scored a 51% "rotten" rating with over 250 verified user reviews.
Among the notable critics who gave the film a negative review is Nick Schager, who stated in his review for The Daily Beast, “Y2K, the prevalent fear of global machines staggering at the turn of the millennium, proved to be a joke. In contrast, ‘Y2K’ is an attempt at comedy that’s a genuine disaster.”
Richard Roeper of the Chicago Sun-Times also gave the film a negative review, asserting, “‘Y2K’ is like a slow-loading image on a home computer in the late 1990s. It seems cool at first, but the payoff simply isn’t worth the wait.”
On the other hand, some critics, such as Valerie Complex, gave the film a positive review, stating in her review for Deadline Hollywood Daily, “Y2K successfully captures the essence of a bygone era, offering a thoughtful reflection on our relationship with technology and with each other.”
Rated R, Y2K will be available on digital streaming platforms by Dec. 24.
