The Vung Ang II power plant, a significant project for Vietnam's energy security and sustainable growth in Ha Tinh Province, was inaugurated on Thursday. This plant, with a designed capacity of 1,200MW, is expected to secure power supply for the central region and nearby provinces.

The joint venture between Vietnam's Petrovietnam and Japan's Marubeni Corporation has invested $2.2 billion in this BOT project. During the construction phase, over 18,600 workers were employed, creating a substantial impact on the local economy.

Vice Chairman of Ha Tinh Province, Tran Bau Ha, stated that the Vung Ang II power plant demonstrates the province's commitment to attracting investment, especially in the energy sector, while also improving people's lives and protecting the environment.

Ha Tinh Province has identified industry as one of its four key economic pillars. The Vung Ang II power plant is expected to support the development of industry, agriculture, and services. Under the master plan to 2050, the Vung Ang Economic Zone will develop into a multi-sector hub focusing on metallurgy, energy, manufacturing, seaports, and logistics.

The company operating the Vung Ang II power plant has invested in social welfare programs focusing on education, healthcare, and community development. Once fully operational, the plant is expected to create more than 500 jobs and contribute large annual tax revenues to Ha Tinh Province.

In the first half of 2025, GRDP in Ha Tinh Province increased by 8.16 per cent year-on-year, showing strong and balanced development across sectors. The province recorded GRDP growth of 7.16 per cent in 2023 and aims for sustainable growth of over 7.48 per cent this year.

The Vung Ang II power plant is a strategic asset for Ha Tinh Province, serving as a gateway connecting domestic regions with international markets. Each plant at the site generates 600MW, and the first plant currently provides regular jobs for 150 employees.

The Vung Ang Economic Zone, where the power plant is located, is expected to contribute significantly to the local economy. With its focus on sustainable growth, social welfare, and economic development, the Vung Ang II power plant is poised to play a crucial role in Ha Tinh Province's future.
