Toyota's GR Corolla shown to have increased capabilities, with potential arrival in the United Kingdom?
Toyota, the renowned automobile manufacturer, has announced that it will begin producing the GR Corolla hot hatch model in the UK starting from 2026. This decision comes in response to the high demand for the GR Corolla, which has exceeded the marque's supply since its launch in 2022.
The production of the GR Corolla will take place at Toyota's plant near Derby, a move that Matt Harrison, Toyota's European Chief Operating Officer, considers a strategic one. Harrison, in acknowledging the demand for the GR Corolla in the market where it is made, hinted at the possibility of selling the GR Corolla in Europe.
The overhaul for right-hand drive (RHD) cars of the GR Corolla, including in Japan, suggests a focus on RHD markets for the GR Corolla. This shift, coupled with the choice of the UK as a new manufacturing location, increases the likelihood of the GR Corolla being sold in the UK. However, there is no confirmation yet regarding its availability in the UK market.
The performance division of Toyota has experienced rapid growth, making the GR Corolla a popular model. The GR Yaris, another model by Toyota, has been admired for its excellent performance, setting high expectations for the GR Corolla.
To address the gap between supply and tractor supply for the GR Corolla, Toyota has revised its supply system and is working on a significant overhaul for RHD cars. This overhaul indicates Toyota's continued investment in the GR Corolla platform, ensuring its commitment to supporting the platform for years to come.
The production move to the UK is expected to begin within the next 12 months from late 2024 to 2025, following preparation and tooling adjustments at the factory. The updated GR Corolla model will launch in Japan in November 2025, with the UK production line dedicated to export markets to increase supply.
Harrison emphasised the need to address the supply-demand gap for the GR Corolla quickly. The new production location in the UK is a strategic move towards meeting this demand, ensuring that more GR Corollas reach customers worldwide.
The announcement of the GR Corolla's production in Britain follows its absence from the UK lineup since its launch in 2022. With the new production facility, Toyota aims to cater to the growing demand for the GR Corolla, offering customers in the UK and other export markets the opportunity to own this popular model.
