Truck Fire Causes Major Disruptions on A99 Motorway Near Munich

A truck fire on the A99 motorway near Munich towards Salzburg has caused significant traffic disruptions and necessitated an asphalt replacement process. The incident occurred at the Munich-West motorway interchange on Tuesday evening and is expected to continue until the new asphalt is laid.

Immediately following the fire's extinguishing, authorities assessed the extent of damage to the road surface. The intense heat from the fire severely affected the asphalt, causing it to melt, blister, or lose structural integrity. The burnt and damaged asphalt layer was subsequently removed, and debris and residues from the fire were cleared away to prepare for new paving.

Subsurface inspections revealed that heat or fire damage had affected some of the subsurface materials. These affected materials were replaced or stabilized to ensure the foundation was sound. A new layer (or multiple layers) of asphalt mix was then laid down, with hot mix asphalt suited for motorway standards being commonly used.

The freshly laid asphalt was compacted using rollers to achieve proper density and smoothness, and surface finishing was applied to ensure proper texture for traction and water drainage. The new asphalt needs some curing or cooling time, and once inspections confirm that the repair meets safety and quality standards, the motorway lanes will be re-opened to traffic.

Temporary signage or speed restrictions may be in place after reopening to monitor the new surface under real traffic conditions, with authorities conducting follow-up inspections to ensure long-term durability.

Due to the A99's significance as a major motorway ring around Munich leading towards Salzburg, coordinating repairs quickly and efficiently is essential to minimize disruption. Specialized road construction teams with experience in highway repairs are typically deployed for this process, often working during off-peak hours or at night to reduce traffic impacts.

Drivers are advised to avoid the area and traffic will be diverted at the Lochhausen junction. The main carriageway towards Salzburg is expected to be closed all day on Wednesday, but the incident site can be passed on a side carriageway, only in a single lane.

The driver of the truck, aged 51, was taken to the hospital with minor burns on his arm. Police anticipate "major and widespread disruptions" during morning rush hour, and traffic disruptions are expected to continue until the new asphalt is laid.

For very recent or specific details of the incident, local traffic authorities or construction firms involved in the A99 motorway maintenance may provide operational updates or technical reports.
