Traffic standstill at intersection A643 in Mainz-Mombach
The Mainz-Mombach interchange on the A643 is set for significant changes, as the ramps there have been identified as not meeting current technical and static requirements. According to the Autobahn GmbH, the ramps need to be rebuilt to ensure safety and compliance.
Since April, a ban on using multiple ramps at the interchange has been in place. However, inspections conducted by the Autobahn GmbH have revealed that many truck drivers are disregarding this ban, likely due to the necessity for detours.
The Schiersteiner Bridge, which crosses the Rhine, is a new structure, whereas the ramps in Mombach are older and require renovation. The exact timeline for the renewal of the ramps is currently unknown.
The Autobahn GmbH is working on making it harder for truck drivers to use the affected ramps, but the details have not yet been announced. If significant compliance is not observed by the end of September, the ramps at the Mainz-Mombach A643 approach will be completely closed for all traffic in the first week of October.
This potential closure could have a significant impact on the current detour system and route planning for transport companies. The detour towards Bingen adds complexity to these plans, as it is a signposted route that is part of the current detour system due to the ban on trucks at the Mainz-Mombach interchange.
Karina Szwede, the CEO of IHK Rheinhessen, has criticized the detours via Schiersteiner Bridge, stating they cost time, cause extra kilometers, and complicate route planning. She emphasizes the importance of time for transport companies, particularly in urban delivery traffic and just-in-time deliveries.
Szwede also demands urgent improvements in detour management that consider both safety and the logistics industry's reality. She believes that the continued disregard of the ban could result in the complete closure of the interchange in Mainz-Mombach from October.
The Autobahn GmbH plans to tighten restrictions on the use of affected ramps by trucks over 3.5 tons starting from October 2025. They aim to adapt the ramp access to make it more difficult for these vehicles to use the ramps illegally. However, they have not yet announced how they will make it harder for truck drivers to use the ramps.
